Shop Your Closet

This week I shopped my closet for an outfit to match to a scarf. I said I was going to match a scarf I hadn't ever worn.... and I didn't. (In this post you can see the two other ways I have worn this scarf.) But I did wear something brand new!

Although I LOVE this jacket, I hadn't worn it yet this year, so I thought it was a great addition to an outfit in which I am supposed to be shopping my closet for something new to wear.
(See how I wore it here to model an Anthro shirt refashion I did.)

Wearing Target jacket and scarf, Old Navy shirt, Gap pants, and Forever Young boots

NEXT SHOPPING TRIP: 30 FOR 30 REMIX. I am taking a break from the weekly shopping trip prompt to participate in a longer style challenge. Basically, you choose 30 items from your closet and make 30 outfits for 30 days. Come back later today to see what items have I picked (and how I am bending the rules).

Want to join in? I will post all of my remixed outfits for the week on Saturdays and continue the linky party so you can link up. BTW, you can link up any outfit post! I would be happy to get a linky with thumbnail photos but since so few people link up I haven't yet.

P.S. It's not too late to go over to GiGis Petals to get a slamming deal on one of my Blooming Sash Belts. You have until the 16th!

Shop Your Closet

This week I went shopping in my closet to find an outfit to wear with my khakis and this is what I came up with. I followed some of the tips in the article from Already Pretty that I linked you to last week, such as the cognac boots. But I really went out a limb and wore red with tan. This was a stretch for me, not only because I don't want to look a Target employee, but because the kids at my school wear red and tan as part of their uniform and I don't want to match or be mixed with the students. The brown jacket solved that problem.

I started with the pants, of course, then added the boots. As I was rummaging around for a shirt, I found the red and though, why not? But this shirt pretty much has wings so I needed something to make it look more fitting. Last time (and the time before) that I wore this I used a black belt so I wanted something different. The jacket was just the thing.

Throw in a green bracelet for some color and voila!

Did you try out your khakis? Or shop your closet in any other way? Link up below!

NEXT SHOPPING TRIP: SCARF I am going to plan an outfit around one (or two) of the new scarves I have that I haven't worn yet.

Be inspired to join in:

Make it the focus of your outfit.

Mix your patterns like Jessica.

Go neutral with a pop like this.

Add a pretty pattern like Emerald.

Tie it in a bow.

Or one of these 25 ways.

Shop Your Closet

This week I did another "free for all" shopping trip into my closet. We had a couple of particularly chilly days this week so I broke out a few of my cold weather staples and remixed them to come up with this outfit.

I am wearing a Coldwater Creek sweater, Old Navy black tee, handmade by my mom skirt, Target boots, and some black tights. The bracelet is from F21 and the watch from Bumbles. I bought the gold leaf charm from the Gem Faire.

Click here to see another outfit with the skirt. This is how I have traditionally worn it (I have had it for years). Going back through the archives only turned up in this terrible/outfit photo of the sweater and this outfit that I actually like. Aren't we all glad I don't take my outfit photos like that anymore???

What do you think about my lipstick??? I don't usually wear a color like that? Should I keep wearing it?

Did you shop your closet and remix a new outfit this week? Link it up below and share with us all (this includes and "what I wore" posts or any outfit posts that show a remix of your wardrobe).

NEXT SHOPPING TRIP: KHAKIS. A few weeks Already Pretty posted this article about styling your khakis. I SO need this. I have several pairs I bought to wear to work and I never wear them. I recently turned a boot cut pair into skinnies so I am ready to bust them out. Go read Sally's article for all the tips.

Love Ramsey makes her khakis business worthy in this outfit. Love the pop of blue.

If you would like a more casual approach, check out this outfit from the Daybook. I love the stripes.

I noticed that Jessica from What I Wore wears khakis a lot. This is her most recent outfit, but if you look over at the sidebar at "recent outfits" you'll see quite a few.

Good luck to us all! I am going to need it! The school year is 25% over and I haven't worn them once. I haven't photographed them (or probably worn them) since the 30 for 30 remix last year. I wore them Day 24 (yuck) and Day 4 (this outfit I actually like).

Shop Your Closet

We are having quite the adventurous weekend, much more than we planned. I can't wait to tell you all about it, but it means that I don't have much of a Shop Your Closet post today.

We were having a "free for all" shopping trip into our closets. Husband and I went on a haunted cruise on the Provo River this week and I needed something warm to wear. I shopped in my closet until I came up with this. I am wearing a lot of Old Navy! The tank, scarf, jeans, and coat are from ON. The headband/hat is from F21. This was the first time I have worn it, although I bought it months ago. I am also wearing that favorite blue cardi of mine that you can't see very well. It was the perfect amount of layers to keep me warm!

Did you shop in your closet this week and come up with a brand new outfit? Go ahead and link it up below!

NEXT SHOPPING TRIP: Can we do "free for all" again? I didn't get to use it like I wanted.

Have a great weekend!

Shop Your Closet

The shopping trip of the week was to be inspired by an outfit seen on Pinterest, a blog, etc. I chose this pin, a very recent find. When I saw it, a light bulb went off in my head. I had never worn my black dress with brown, denim, a belt like this, a scarf, or cheetah print. Duh!

(I didn't have a necklace like the one in the pin so I added the cheetah scarf. I really liked it!)

Dress: (old), Jacket: (old), Scarf: Target, Boots: Steve Madden, Belt: local boutique, Shades: Kohl's, Tights: Walmart?

I can't wait to wear more outfits inspired by my Pinterest board. However, I have been collecting fall outfits for awhile, so I will have to wait until it cools down again. We're smack dab in the middle of Indian Summer. And for that reason...
NEXT SHOPPING TRIP: Free-for-all! I have some ideas for other shopping trips, but I want cooler weather to try them out. So this week I will have no guidelines, but will find some new outfit in my closet that I have never worn without buying anything new.

If you have an outfit in which you shopped your closet (you didn't have to follow my challenge), link it up below!

Shop Your Closet

Wahoo! A couple of you tried out the brooches last week! You did great! Thanks for joining me!

This week's shopping trip was to wear some of that holiday sparkle before the holidays. I chose to wear this green glittery tank. I remember going shopping with my friend Erica and she helped me pick this out. We got in at Papaya in December of 2005. We also bought a shrug from Express. It was the first shrug/cardigan type item I bought. I wore them both to our New Year's Eve party. This was about 1 year before husband and I started dating, but I already had a big crush on him. I felt like I was looking fine that night. : ) Since then, I have really only wore this on holidays. I decided this week to wear it on a regular 'ol day.

I chose to pair the tank with my favorite blue cardigan, black skinnies, and my favorite brown boots. (If you have been with me for awhile you might recall how many times I wore this cardi/boot combo last year. Looks like we're in for that again!) I am also wearing a new leaf necklace that I picked up at the Gem Faire a couple of weekends ago.

I don't know if I am completely satisfied with this. I had something else in mind, but didn't try it on the night before. When I got dressed in the morning it looked terrible so I quickly grabbed this cardigan and went with it. It look okay, though. I have thought of a few other ways to wear this so hopefully we'll be seeing it a bit more.

And seeing it was the first day of winter (remember how I said it snowed?) I am glad I bundled up in a coat and scarf!

Did you play along? Link up below! I realize this feature is mostly about me and may be hard to participate in. Does anyone have any suggestions for future shopping trips into our closets? I am up for new ideas! Please use the button and spread the love.

NEXT SHOPPING TRIP: PINTEREST INSPIRED. I have a ton of ideas waiting for my closet on my style board on Pinterest. This week I am going to put those to good use and come up with a new outfit. If you don't use Pinterest you can borrow my board, or just be inspired by another blogger, an ad, or something else on the Internet.

Good luck!

P.S. thanks for letting me know the linky wasn't working last week. Continue to report problems!

This week's shopping trip was to look for a new outfit wearing a brooch. How did you do?

I made this brooch; it's the same flower from the Blooming Sash Belts, but with a pin back on it. I love it! I got quite a few compliments that day. I wore it for parent teacher conferences, but half way through first period I had to shed the sweater for the rest of the day so I moved the flower to the shirt.

Shirt: hand me down, Cardi: Target, Belt: Ross, Flower: Made by me, skirt: Ross, Shoes: Steve Madden via Ross

NEXT SHOPPING TRIP: Sparkles. I have several pieces that I have bought for Christmas parties and stuff and then don't wear again. Is that wasteful just to them wear once or twice per year? Many people wear sparkles and sequins during the week. I am going to try to wear something this week. Are you in?

Inspiration:

Kendi guest posting at pretty shiny sparkly.

Chici Bella has a cute outfit board.

The goal of this week's shopping trip was "neutral with a pop." Admittedly, I didn't get too creative but I hadn't thought to wear this top with these shoes so I learned something new. It was spirit week at school. I am the adviser over the whole thing so I was busy thinking about that and what I could wear for the dress up days so I didn't put a lot of effort into shopping my closet.

These shoes aren't super comfortable but they sure do pop!

And friends.... this is what happens when I try to pose.... scary!

I was SO not meant to be a model! And my shirt is all bunchy and weird. Oh well. At least my legs look long! : )

Wearing: Gap pants, DownEast shirt, and my $5 red heels.

Did you try? Link up below or comment and tell me how it went.

Next shopping trip: Wear a brooch. Or a pin. Whatever you want to call it. I think flower pins and vintage brooches are so cute, but I haven't really learned to wear them yet. I don't know how to just grab one and go. So this week I will go shopping in my closet to find ways to wear my brooches.

I pinned this outfit from La Vie Petite a long time ago with the intent to copy it, but haven't yet.

I like the unique way that Elaine wears her brooch in this outfit.

And if you are lucky enough to live where it's chilly enough for scarves already you can pin your scarf like the one in this tutorial.

Good luck and have fun!

Last week I failed miserably to dress up a t-shirt, remember? So I made sure to do it this week, along with the current challenge of a fall transitional outfit.

I wore a t-shirt that I actually wear to exercise in. I made sure it was clean :), then accessorized it with a blazer, and this fabulous necklace. (I bought the necklace because I thought it was leaves, turns out it's actually feathers, but I like it anyway).

Paired with skinnies and heels it made this a perfect outfit for work. I really loved how it turned out.
Blazer: Old, T-shirt: Target, Necklace and Bracelet: F21, Pants: Gap

This week we were supposed to wear an outfit that could transition from summer to fall.
I love this cardigan- it's a perfect transitional piece. It's a lightweight layer and a great color. I paired it with this lace tank top that I have worn all spring and summer. Cuffed pants and flats are great for transitioning too (although I am still wearing a lot of open toes).

Cardi: Ross, Tank: Kohl's, Pants: Old Navy, Shoes: Kohl's, Necklace: gift from my MIL

What kinds of things do you wear to transition between seasons? Link up below.

NEXT WEEK'S CHALLENGE: Neutral with a pop. I found a blog that ran a 21 day fashion challenge last month. I really loved the example outfits of neutral colors with a pop of bright color I found there so I want to try it myself. Thanks to Freckles in April for the idea. Click here to see all the example on Kayla's blog.

Good luck!

On Monday I will have a knock-off necklace tutorial. Come back then!

You guys, I failed this week. The challenge was to dress up a t-shirt. I procrastinated doing laundry so I planned to wear my outfit Friday. But I forgot that in honor of 9/11 it was best dress day at school. Oops. Maybe I will try again next week.

So instead of showing my outfit this week, I thought I would highlight a few that have been linked up in the past.

The shop Best Bib and Tucker links up outfits they create from items in their store. This is a beautiful example of the monochromatic challenge.

DaenelT, from Living Outside the Stacks says she rarely wears this skirt! What?!? It's fabulous! And she did a great job styling it!

Samantha broke out this darling dress for a challenge a couple of week ago. Super cute!

Thanks ladies for participating!

Did anyone dress up a t-shirt this week? Link up below and grab a button if you feel so inclined.

NEXT CHALLENGE: SUMMER TO FALL. This week, Momma Go Round has featured several bloggers showing how they take their summer wardrobes into fall. There were great articles from women living in different climates so you are bound to find some inspiration over there. Wear a transitional outfit that maybe uses both summer and fall pieces, and is appropriate for both the time of year and the temperature.

Good luck!

This week's challenge was to wear something monochromatic. This was the first challenge that I didn't already secretly have something in mind to wear. I wanted to cheat and wear this again, but instead I cheated and wore black with all my pinks.

I figured that the skirt was already monochromatic, I would just accessorize it to be more so. I have had this skirt since 2002. I wore it for my senior portraits in high school! I have only ever worn it with black so I added the pink blazer, shoes, and handmade plastic cup necklace. Not my favorite outfit ever, but I successfully shopped my closet! I have had the shoes since 2005 and the blazer since probably about '06 or '07 and have never worn these pieces together.

Everything is so old that I really don't remember where much of it came from. I think the blazer is from Vanity and the rest from department stores.

How did you do? Grab a button and link up below!

NEXT WEEK'S CHALLENGE: Dress up a t-shirt. I used to wear a ton of graphic t-shirts and hoodies. I then drastically changed my style to where I rarely wear those items besides when working out. I still have a few t-shirts that don't get much use so this week I am going to pull together a nice outfit using one of those tees.

Here's ten tips for dressing up a t-shirt.

In this video, the lovely Jessica Quirk from What I Wore, mixes a t-shirt into a nice outfit.

Don't know if my weather would permit this, but check out this pin.

And finally, this pin takes the t-shirt to the office.

Good luck!

Shop Your Closet

This week's challenge was to wear something you have never or hardly ever wear. How did you do?

I picked this challenge just so I would make myself wear this belt. I have had it for about one year and have never worn it. I am not sure why. Animal prints are really in right now, I just have a hard time styling this belt.
I picked out an outfit to wear to church and when I put it on that morning it looked horrid. We were already late so I had to just throw something together and this is what I came up with. There's nothing extraordinary about this outfit but at least I wore the belt.

Wearing: Dress: [small local shop that is now out of business and I can't remember it's name], Sweater: Ross; Belt: Ross, Wedges: Hand-me-downs.

NEXT CHALLENGE: This week, let's try a monochromatic look. This one is going to be a bit tough for me because I don't have many colored bottoms.

Be inspired: I love this look from Kendi. I don't know if it's entirely monochromatic, but the accessories look fabulous.

Here are some tips for making this work.

Cute and Little wore a great monochromatic pink outfit recently.

This is a fun all blue outfit.

Come to think of it, I guess this week I wore monochromatic. I will have to go for something other than black. I better head off to my closet and start planning...

Good luck!
