Disney Week: Magical Birthday Card

This is a project that I did back in June for card club (which I am no longer a part of so I won't have any more card club cards to show you). I don't think it is fabulous and it is very simple so I never posted, but it fits with the theme of this week so here ya go!

First, you need to make your Mickey. I used a hole punch to cut the large circle and a stencil for the small ones. Remember that if Mickeys head is the size of a quarter, his ears should be a dime.

I used a variety of colorful papers that reminded me of a party.

Cut your cards from cardstock.

Cut a peice of your patterned paper that is about 1/4" smaller than the card on all sides.



I downloaded a Disney font HERE and typed the phrase "Have a Magical Birthday" in Word. I printed it off and cut it out the size I wanted.

You could add more detail to make it more fun and more "crafty." I had to make 12 of these cards so I kept them simple.

Disney Week: Mickey Headband Tutorial

As I mentioned in an earlier Disney Week post, Disney merchandise in the park can be expensive! I wanted something fun I could wear on my trip that wouldn't cost hardly anything. I decided to make my own Micky Mouse headband!

First, I created the ever popular rosettes out of a $1 t-shirt I bought for projects such as this. I like the t-shirt material for this project because I think the circles look less like flowers.

Make one large circle for the head and two smaller circles for the ears. (The artist in the Animation Studio at the park said that if the head is a quarter the ears should be dimes. I think my ears could have been a little bigger.)

This is plain Mickey but you could jazz it up if you want.

You can add some bling.

I also think it would be so cute to add ribbon and make Minnie Mouse.

(Sorry for the sideways picture. Some of my pictures lately are just doing that I don't know what the problem is.)

I decided to stick with just a plain Mickey. Glue the rosettes on a piece of felt to look like Mickey. Cut out around the Mickey shape.

Attach it to the headband with hot glue. Then put a small piece of felt over the back to finish it off.

This is the best picture I have from the trip of me wearing the headband.

These Mickeys could also be used as hair clips, or attached to t-shirts or tote bags for your Disney trip. I think they would make really cute and unique gifts for little girls (especially Minnie Mouse).

Disney Week: Trip Tips

When you purchase food or snacks in Disneyland a coupon is printed at the bottom of your receipt. It is for 20% off your entire purchase at the Main Street Emporium, World of Disney, and Greetings from California shops. Those are the 3 largest shops in Disneyland- most merchandise is sold in at least one of the shops. The coupon is only good from 9 am to noon for about a week so my suggestion is to shop around and see what you may want to buy then purchase it all the last morning of the trip with your coupon. It saved me about $8.50 which was almost like getting one of my husband's Star Wars action figures free! : )

If you want to get a pineapple whip before going to the Tiki Room enter the Tiki Room waiting area and purchase the treat from that side. The line will probably be a lot shorter.

If you want to ride Toy Story Midway Mania go to California Adventure first thing in the morning and RUN around the pier towards California Screamin'. We happened to get there at the right time and thought we go around the other way past the Ferris wheel to beat the crowd but by the time we got to the ride the line had already formed on the other side and it was SUPER long. (Really fun ride, though!)

The best time to ride Pirates is during the second showing of Fantasmic. Every single night (even Friday) there was no line at this time.

The new World of Color show is AMAZING!!! But not worth all of the grief to see it. You have to stand in a really really long line first thing in the morning to get a fast pass ticket. We walked by when the line was really short because there were only tickets to the 11:15 pm show available so we grabbed a couple. We had to meet to get in line at 10:15. It was miserable. We were packed in so tight with people eating stinky food and complaining. Forget that! We ditched the line and walked towards the current show thinking we would just walk really slowly past it a few times to watch. We were lucky enough to find a spot near the golden zephyr ride where we could see quite well. Sooo much better than standing in line for an hour. Two nights later I wanted to see it again. This time we went to the balcony behind the Silly Symphony Swings. It was pretty much empty up until the show started and a small crowd gathered. In both of these spots we couldn't really see the projections very well. But we could hear the music and see the water fountains and colors which is the best party anyway. I would totally recommend this method. I think this would work well for kids too. They might not do well standing in hours of lines just for a 20 minute show!

Check out the Animation Studio in CA Adventure (in the Hollywood section near the Off the Page store). There, you are given live drawing lessons from a Disney artist. We were taught how to draw Minnie Mouse. I can't, no really I can't, draw, but I could follow along and drew a beautiful picture! I saved it and it is going on the inspiration board in my craft room! So fun!

I learned from a friend after I get home that the triangle and diamond shapes are worth the most points in the Buzz Lightyear ride.

In CA adventure there is a place near the winery called the Blue Sky Cellar. Go there if you want to see what the Imagineers have planned for the park- including a new Cars land!

The only free food that I know of in the entire Disneyland resort is at Pacific Wharf in CA Adventures. You can take the bread factory and tortilla factory tours and get a free sample of each food. They are self-guided and very short. I do, however, think you should take the tour if you are going to take the food.

Captain EO is awesome.

The left side of the Matterhorn ride is faster and more fun than the right side.

A great fireworks viewing spot is between the Matterhorn and the Monorail track. No crowd will gather until the show begins. You can't see the fireworks shot off from the center of the park very well, but the main fireworks are clearly in view.

I HATED the glow fest! It is a new thing in CA Adventure at night. The lights, colors, and music were fun but the rest was not. They wheeled out two large carts every night that only served alcohol. There were also dancers up high in cages. It was just like a rave or clubbing or something. The Hollywood section of the park REEKED of alcohol. I do NOT go to Disneyland to smell beer and dance with drunk people. Ugh.

Disney Week: Know Before You Go

Last week I spent a magical week in Disneyland with just my husband to celebrate our anniversary. In honor of the fun I had and the artistic inspiration I have gained, I have decided to have "Disney Week" on my blog. Don't worry, there will be crafts! (This weekend I will return to shirt refashions. I have an awesome Anthro inspired blouse to show you!)

If you are planning a trip to a Disney Park read on for my tips on preparing for the trip. This first tip would be great for a picnic with the kids too!

We had to drive 11 hours to get to Disneyland. I wanted to pack some healthy-ish snacks so that we would be less tempted to stop for junk food and waste money. I thought it would be much more fun to have Disney themed snacks!

I purchased Disney fruit snacks, Disney dried fruit, and Mickey Mouse cheese. I even sprung for the brand name fruit bars because they had Toy Story on the box!

(I didn't really like the dried fruit, but my husband did.)

I also brought bread and peanut butter to make sandwiches along the way (and you could even take them in to the park to save lunch money). I had the brilliant idea of making the sandwiches shaped like Mickey Mouse but my cookie cutter was too big for the bread. I had already gone to the grocery store and we were leaving the next day so I didn't buy different bread.

I didn't do this on purpose, but even the bread I bought was Disney with the Camp Rock 2 advertisement.


I also threw in some gram crackers and some 100 calorie pack cookies (compromising for my husband.) I put everything in this cute giant Mickey tote that my mother-in-law brought back from her Disney trip.

The greatest Disney tip I have ever heard is to buy toys and prizes for your kids at Walmart or the dollar store before the trip. Then, every day you can give your kids a gift without breaking the bank. When I have kids and take them to Disneyland I am totally doing this!

I think this advice is also good for clothes. Every time I go to a Disney Park I want to buy a Disney shirt but just a Mickey t-shirt can run $30!

So instead I found this cute Mickey t-shirt at Walmart for only $3! I bought it before the trip and waited to wear it when I was there. I wore it the first and last days of the trip and feel like I got my money's worth!

My family has booked quite a few trips through getawaytoday.com. You get a great deal and they always give each adult traveler a Disney pin. I really have a fetish for pins so I love it. (The kiddos get a different prize but I am not sure what it is.)
