Disney Week: Trip Tips

When you purchase food or snacks in Disneyland a coupon is printed at the bottom of your receipt. It is for 20% off your entire purchase at the Main Street Emporium, World of Disney, and Greetings from California shops. Those are the 3 largest shops in Disneyland- most merchandise is sold in at least one of the shops. The coupon is only good from 9 am to noon for about a week so my suggestion is to shop around and see what you may want to buy then purchase it all the last morning of the trip with your coupon. It saved me about $8.50 which was almost like getting one of my husband's Star Wars action figures free! : )

If you want to get a pineapple whip before going to the Tiki Room enter the Tiki Room waiting area and purchase the treat from that side. The line will probably be a lot shorter.

If you want to ride Toy Story Midway Mania go to California Adventure first thing in the morning and RUN around the pier towards California Screamin'. We happened to get there at the right time and thought we go around the other way past the Ferris wheel to beat the crowd but by the time we got to the ride the line had already formed on the other side and it was SUPER long. (Really fun ride, though!)

If you don't know about Fast Passes, learn about them on disney.com before you go.

The best time to ride Pirates is during the second showing of Fantasmic. Every single night (even Friday) there was no line at this time.

The new World of Color show is AMAZING!!! But not worth all of the grief to see it. You have to stand in a really really long line first thing in the morning to get a fast pass ticket. We walked by when the line was really short because there were only tickets to the 11:15 pm show available so we grabbed a couple. We had to meet to get in line at 10:15. It was miserable. We were packed in so tight with people eating stinky food and complaining. Forget that! We ditched the line and walked towards the current show thinking we would just walk really slowly past it a few times to watch. We were lucky enough to find a spot near the golden zephyr ride where we could see quite well. Sooo much better than standing in line for an hour. Two nights later I wanted to see it again. This time we went to the balcony behind the Silly Symphony Swings. It was pretty much empty up until the show started and a small crowd gathered. In both of these spots we couldn't really see the projections very well. But we could hear the music and see the water fountains and colors which is the best party anyway. I would totally recommend this method. I think this would work well for kids too. They might not do well standing in hours of lines just for a 20 minute show!

Check out the Animation Studio in CA Adventure (in the Hollywood section near the Off the Page store). There, you are given live drawing lessons from a Disney artist. We were taught how to draw Minnie Mouse. I can't, no really I can't, draw, but I could follow along and drew a beautiful picture! I saved it and it is going on the inspiration board in my craft room! So fun!

I learned from a friend after I get home that the triangle and diamond shapes are worth the most points in the Buzz Lightyear ride.

In CA adventure there is a place near the winery called the Blue Sky Cellar. Go there if you want to see what the Imagineers have planned for the park- including a new Cars land!

The only free food that I know of in the entire Disneyland resort is at Pacific Wharf in CA Adventures. You can take the bread factory and tortilla factory tours and get a free sample of each food. They are self-guided and very short. I do, however, think you should take the tour if you are going to take the food.

Captain EO is awesome.

The left side of the Matterhorn ride is faster and more fun than the right side.

A great fireworks viewing spot is between the Matterhorn and the Monorail track. No crowd will gather until the show begins. You can't see the fireworks shot off from the center of the park very well, but the main fireworks are clearly in view.

I HATED the glow fest! It is a new thing in CA Adventure at night. The lights, colors, and music were fun but the rest was not. They wheeled out two large carts every night that only served alcohol. There were also dancers up high in cages. It was just like a rave or clubbing or something. The Hollywood section of the park REEKED of alcohol. I do NOT go to Disneyland to smell beer and dance with drunk people. Ugh.

And on that note- have a fun Disney trip!

Disney Week: Know Before You Go

Last week I spent a magical week in Disneyland with just my husband to celebrate our anniversary. In honor of the fun I had and the artistic inspiration I have gained, I have decided to have "Disney Week" on my blog. Don't worry, there will be crafts! (This weekend I will return to shirt refashions. I have an awesome Anthro inspired blouse to show you!)

If you are planning a trip to a Disney Park read on for my tips on preparing for the trip. This first tip would be great for a picnic with the kids too!

We had to drive 11 hours to get to Disneyland. I wanted to pack some healthy-ish snacks so that we would be less tempted to stop for junk food and waste money. I thought it would be much more fun to have Disney themed snacks!

I purchased Disney fruit snacks, Disney dried fruit, and Mickey Mouse cheese. I even sprung for the brand name fruit bars because they had Toy Story on the box!

(I didn't really like the dried fruit, but my husband did.)

I also brought bread and peanut butter to make sandwiches along the way (and you could even take them in to the park to save lunch money). I had the brilliant idea of making the sandwiches shaped like Mickey Mouse but my cookie cutter was too big for the bread. I had already gone to the grocery store and we were leaving the next day so I didn't buy different bread.

I didn't do this on purpose, but even the bread I bought was Disney with the Camp Rock 2 advertisement.

I also threw in some gram crackers and some 100 calorie pack cookies (compromising for my husband.) I put everything in this cute giant Mickey tote that my mother-in-law brought back from her Disney trip.

(Sorry for the sideways picture, I don't know what is wrong!)

The greatest Disney tip I have ever heard is to buy toys and prizes for your kids at Walmart or the dollar store before the trip. Then, every day you can give your kids a gift without breaking the bank. When I have kids and take them to Disneyland I am totally doing this!

I think this advice is also good for clothes. Every time I go to a Disney Park I want to buy a Disney shirt but just a Mickey t-shirt can run $30!

So instead I found this cute Mickey t-shirt at Walmart for only $3! I bought it before the trip and waited to wear it when I was there. I wore it the first and last days of the trip and feel like I got my money's worth!

My family has booked quite a few trips through getawaytoday.com. You get a great deal and they always give each adult traveler a Disney pin. I really have a fetish for pins so I love it. (The kiddos get a different prize but I am not sure what it is.)

Come back again this week for more Disney fun!

Blooming Sash Belts

I haven't been blogging much this week because I have been busy creating a new product for Yellow Blackbird!

All of the flowers are shown on black satin ribbon but can be put on another color or style of ribbon. The ribbon is cut 2 yards long (unless another size is requested) as to tie a bow in the back. The flowers are placed off center to be worn on the side of the body.

The Blooming Sash Belt is currently available in the following colors:

Pink

Hot Pink Black (I've already sold 2 of these!)

White

Red

These belts would be perfect for bridesmaids! They can also be worn to the office, church, parties, or even everyday!

The Blooming Sash Belt will also be available in black and white lace.

(As soon as I can get them listed!)

These belts are only $15.00 each. If you order 4 or more they are only $12.00 each!

If the color you like is sold out, just wait and it will be relisted, or contact me for a custom order.

Click HERE to see the belts in my Etsy shop.

Thanks for letting me shamelessly self-promote.

ALMOST 100 FOLLOWERS!!! I can't believe it!!! Thanks everyone!!!

Nautical Jewelry Tutorial

Many of you may have probably seen the tutorial for the sailor's knot bracelets on Etsy, especially because it was featured on U-Create. When I saw the tutorial I knew I had to try it! I immediately went to the craft store and bought some cord. Read on to see how it went and get my advice.

This photo was the first time (after a couple of tries) that I successfully finished the bracelet. It wasn't too bad, but it was way too big! I used a soup can like they suggested, but it was too big for me. I have really tiny wrists.

I used this smaller can of baking powder to create my bracelet. If you want one in small size use a can like this.

It took a few more tries until I got it looking (almost) perfect. I was really happy with how it turned out- except one thing. I had tons of cord left! The instructions called for 3 1/2 yards and I had a little over 1 yard left. If you want to make a small bracelet buy a little less cord!

I had to come up with some other use for the cord and this is what I got:

I love it! I didn't take step-by-step pictures because I was experimenting but I will explain what to do:

-Arrange your cord in a design you like on a piece of cardstock.

-Dip a toothpick in strong glue like E-6000 (go outside to use this smelly glue!).

-Place the toothpick between two pieces of touching cord. Squeeze the cord together and pull the toothpick out.

-Repeat with all places where the cord is touching. Let dry

The clasp isn't very professional; I know there are much better methods out there but I just wanted to use what I had on hand. Here is a how-to:

-Wrap the ends of the cord in clear tape to keep it from fraying.

-Hot glue chain to the taped cord.

-Hot glue ribbon over the tape and chain, tucking the ends of the ribbon under to prevent fraying.

-Attach a clasp to the chain using jewelry pliers.

I was a little surprised at how much my husband liked this one, seeing as how it is a bit different. But I love it! I am wearing it as I am writing this!

I should not have taken these photos on a white background. Oh well...

Happy Birthday to Me! (Rosette and Pearl Statement Necklace)

Sunday is my birthday. As you can tell I like to keep my birthday very quiet and not let anyone know about the big day- NOT! I love to tell everyone about birthday! So to everyone out there in blog land- it's my birthday!!!!

I decided to make myself a birthday gift- this fabulous rosette statement necklace!

The rosettes are made from a pillowcase. The thick material was great for keeping the roses together. I glued a pearl to each rose. I wound the pearl trim around the roses, hot gluing every few beads to the fabric. Next, I glued the whole thing on felt and attached the chain by hooking a jump ring on the pearl trim.

Due to my birthday being on Sunday and family parties on Saturday, my husband took me out for my birthday date on Friday. I proudly wore my new necklace!

Refashion #5 Rosette Tee

I know this is not a new idea. Rosette tees are all over the place. But I thought I would share my version with you!

This is the second of my Old Navy basic $5 tees. (Click here to see the first project. There's one more to go and it is something special!)

I created the rosettes out of black, white, and gray t-shirts. I chose to use t-shirts so the roses wouldn't fray. If you haven't made these roses yet click here for a tutorial I found online to show you how. They are so easy and cute!

Arrange the rosettes on your t-shirt. I always play around for a few minutes to find the perfect arrangement. Then I take a photo of my project so I can look back at the arrangement in case it gets messed up during the gluing or sewing.

I took the advice of my blog readers and purchased some fabric glue. I used that to attach the flowers instead of my standard hot glue treatment.

I left the tags on because this shirt was a gift. I just wanted to try it on to make sure that the roses looked okay and didn't pop off. Sorry Callie! But while I had it on I snapped a few pictures!

Refashion #4 Tule Flowers Tee

Here is another simple, fun t-shirt refashion.

Materials:
T-shirt
Another shirt of the same color that can be cut up
A little bit of (white) tule
Seed beeds

I started with a basic t-shirt from Old Navy. (Tomorrow, 7/22, is the last day of their basics sale. This shirt is only $5. I bought 3 of them.)

Cut random geometric shapes from the other t-shirt. I cut different sizes so I could layer the shapes.

Do the same thing with the tule. Cut random geometric shapes in different sizes.
(Sorry, no picture.)

Stack the shapes on top of each other from largest to smallest.

Sew the flowers together by folding it in half and stitching a couple of times. Then fold it in half another direction and do again. This creates dimension.

Add beads to the center. On some flowers I did one bead in the center, and three on others. (Remember that odd numbers look better in designs.)

Arrange the flowers along the neckline of the t-shirt and sew or glue them on.

I like it. It is different than any other shirt I have. What do you think?

Stay tuned! More refashions coming up soon!
